Joshua Dinaburg

Fire Test Specialist

When CSA Group opened a new Distributed Energy Resource lab in Cleveland, Ohio, it sought to fill it not only with cutting-edge equipment, but some of North America’s most respected technical experts. Having honed his technical expertise as a fire protection consultant for over a decade, Joshua Dinaburg was a natural fit to lead the lab’s impressive fire testing laboratory. Joshua shares more about his role setting up the laboratory from the ground up, and what motivates him to continuously seek excellence.

  1. Describe your CSA Group career journey.

I started with CSA Group just over one year ago to help develop fire test capabilities for the energy storage group. I had previously spent 15 years at a fire protection engineering consulting firm running and maintaining several fire test laboratories and studying issues in fire protection for code and performance evaluations. At the time, CSA Group was in the process of building its new Distributed Energy Resource Lab in Cleveland, Ohio and gave me the opportunity to help lead the development of a new fire testing laboratory for energy storage systems.

  2. What is a typical day at work like for you?

While we were constructing the new lab, a large portion of my workday was spent in planning and design meetings. Now that the fire testing laboratory is operational, I still spend time in meetings, but more of my time is dedicated to coordinating client testing and hands-on lab work. We have hired new team members to work in the lab, so I also spend a fair amount of time training and mentoring. Building and operating a new lab space, while also hiring and training new staff has made for a busy, challenging and fun start to my journey here at CSA Group!

  3. What is the most rewarding aspect of your role at CSA Group?

The most rewarding aspect of my role is the support I receive when I need to solve a challenge. CSA Group’s management goes above and beyond to secure the resources needed and to help clear any roadblocks in our way. Our management team is committed to continuously improving the operations and safety of our labs including acquiring the latest cutting-edge instrumentation and equipment, and quickly identifying the need for new safety procedures to keep employees safe. As a team we are constantly assessing the energy market for new opportunities and determining how to bring more capabilities into the lab to meet the changing needs of our clients. CSA Group has allowed me to voice my needs and ideas for growth, while also providing the tangible support I need to help get there.

  4. If you could describe working at CSA Group in one word, what would it be? Why?

Driven. There is always a new challenge, new goal, new client or new project. Especially in an emerging and quickly moving space like distributed energy resources, there is not much time to sit back and let things happen around you. We are constantly active in moving things forward.

  5. Why is CSA Group a great place to work?

Everyone is driven toward the same goals of being safe, efficient, and effective and support is provided to get there together. The entire organization works together to provide safe working environments, to keep the buildings and facilities operating and to maintain the work-life balance of all employees.
