In 1937 the first edition of a CSA Safety Code for Elevators was published to meet a desire for uniform provincial legislation governing safety requirements for elevators. In keeping with advances made in the manufacture and use of elevating devices, the code was periodically amended and eventually it covered elevators, dumbwaiters, and escalators. In 1963 the Committee responsible for this Code decided that hoists used to carry workmen and materials during construction of buildmgs and other structures, and which are dismantled on completion of construction, should be covered by a safety code. The Committee recommended that a code be developed on safety requirements for workmen's hoists, separate from CSA Standard B44, Safety Code for Elevators, Dumbwaiters, Escalators. A survey conducted by CSA confirmed the need for such a Standard and a committee was organized to prepare CSA Standard 2185, Safety Code for Workmen's Hoists.
Scope
1.1 This Code applies to the design, construction, installation, operation, inspection, testing, maintenance, alterations, and repair of hoists, which are not a permanent part of the structures, installed inside or outside buildings during construction, alteration or demolition and used to raise and lower material connected with or related to the building project. The hoist shall not be used to transport persons, except qualified hoist erectors, servicemen, or inspectors.
