Preface
This is Supplement No. 1 to the fourth edition of CSA N293, Fire protection for nuclear power plants. The fourth edition of CSA N293 was published in 2012 and reprinted in 2017 with Update No. 1 incorporated. This Supplement is to be used in conjunction with CSA N293.
This Supplement is provided for direction regarding application and adaptation of CSA N293 fire protection requirements to be considered and implemented with the emerging technologies related to small modular reactors (SMRs).
Users of this Supplement are reminded that the site selection, design, manufacture, construction, installation, commissioning, operation, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities in Canada are subject to the Nuclear Safety and Control Act and Regulations. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission might impose requirements in addition to those described in this Supplement.
The CSA N-Series Standards provide an interlinked set of requirements for the management of nuclear facilities and activities. The CSA N286 Standard provides overall direction to management to develop and implement sound management practices and controls, while the other CSA nuclear Standards provide specific technical requirements that support the management system.
This Supplement was prepared by the SMR Task Force, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Fire Protection for Nuclear Power Plants and the Strategic Steering Committee on Nuclear Standards, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee.
