These Standards were prepared by the Technical Committee on Precast Concrete Paving Elements, under the jurisdiction of the Strategic Steering Committee on Construction and Civil Infrastructure, and have been formally approved by the Technical Committee.
This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.

CSA A231.1:19 - Precast concrete paving slabs
Scope
1.1
This Standard specifies requirements for concrete paving slabs manufactured from hydraulic cement concrete to be used in the construction of pavement and roof coverings. Concrete paving slabs either consist of a single concrete throughout or two layers consisting of a backing concrete with a face that has a typical minimum thickness of 4 mm. This Standard includes units with architectural finishes or tactile surfaces.
Notes:
1) Annex A contains information on efflorescence and recommends methods for its removal. Annex B provides information on the installation of pavement components made with precast concrete paving slabs.
2) The terms slab and concrete paving slab are used interchangeably in this Standard.
3) The terms height and thickness are used interchangeably in this Standard.
1.2
In this Standard, shall is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; should is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and may is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard.
Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.
Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.
Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.

Concrete pavers either consist of a single concrete throughout or two layers consisting of a backing concrete with a face that has a typical minimum thickness of 4 mm.
Notes:
1) Annex A contains information on efflorescence and recommends methods for its removal. Annex B provides information on the installation of interlocking concrete pavements. Annex C contains information about testing and using segmental concrete paving units that do not meet the strict definition of a concrete paver.
2) The terms paver and interlocking concrete paver are used interchangeably in this Standard.
3) The terms height and thickness are used interchangeably in this Standard.
