The danger of falling from heights while on the job can be the cause of serious injuries and, in extreme cases, fatalities. Identifying the potential risks and the types of fall protection that should be correctly used for a specific task can make all the difference in helping workers stay safe. CSA Z259.2.4 - Fall arresters and vertical rigid rails is part of a series of standards on the components of fall-protection systems; it replaces CAN/CSA-Z259.2.1-98 – Fall arresters, vertical lifelines and rails covering vertical rigid rails.
CSA Z259.2.4 covers the design, testing and marking requirements for manufactured fall arresters under fixed vertical rigid rails that are used on a vertical or slope plane. This standard does not cover work positioning and horizontal travel systems. Highlights of Z259.2.4: (a) Specifies design and marking requirements for manufactured fall arresters and fixed vertical rigid rails (b) Provides classifications and testing requirements for Classes AD (automatic – dorsal), AS (automatic – sterna), ADP (automatic – dorsal – panic hardware) and MDP (manual – dorsal – panic hardware) fall arrestors
Preface/Scope
Preface
This is the first edition of CSA Z259.2.4, Fall arresters and vertical rigid rails. It is part of a series of Standards on components of fall-protection systems and replaces that part of CAN/CSA-Z259.2.1-98, Fall arresters, vertical lifelines and rails, covering vertical rigid rails.
Scope
1.1 This Standard specifies design, testing, and marking requirements for manufactured fall arresters and fixed vertical rigid rails that are used on a vertical or slope plane. Vertical plane means an angle of not more than 15° from the vertical, which prevents the worker from leaning back.
1.2 The equipment specified in this Standard is intended for use where there is a danger of falling from heights. In the event of fall, the fall arrester will lock on the fixed vertical rigid rail to arrest the fall.
1.3 This Standard does not cover work positioning and horizontal travel systems.
1.4 In CSA standards, shall is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; should is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and may is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard.
Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.
Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.
Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (nonmandatory) to define their application.
1.5 The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
