This is the first edition of Supplement No. 1 to O86.1-94, Engineering Design in Wood (Limit States Design).
It consists of the following additions to the Standard:
(a) a new Clause 5.5.13, Sawn Lumber Design for Specific Truss Applications;
(b) a new Clause 10.10, Joist Hangers;
(c) an amended replacement for Clause 13.2, Prefabricated Wood I-Joists; and
(d) a new Clause 13.4, Structural Composite Lumber Products.
The additions are supported by additions and related amendments to Clause 1.2, Reference Publications, to Clause 2.1, Definitions, to Clause 2.2, Symbols, to Clause 10.8.3.2.4, Shear Resistance (of truss plates), and to Appendix A, Additional Information; Alternative Procedures.
Truss designs produced using Clause 5.5.13 are intended to be compatible with, and provide an extension to, designs developed using CSA Standard O86.1-94. These provisions apply only to the design of fully triangulated metal-plate-connected wood roof trusses used within a given range of spans consistent with National Building Code of Canada Part 9 structures and at maximum spacings of 610 mm. The addition to Appendix A provides commentary on the new Clause 5.5.13.
Clause 10.10 introduces a procedure for the design of steel joist hangers attached to wood beams and supporting wood joists. Design is predicated on the provision by the hanger manufacturer of specified load test data developed using standard test procedures.
An amended version of Clause 13.2, Prefabricated Wood I-Joists, and a new Clause 13.4, Structural Composite Lumber Products, are i ncluded. Both clauses cover proprietary products which have been evaluated by standard procedures for their engineering design capacities. The verification of the manufacturer's published data and maintenance of production quality are under the supervision of a recognized certification organization.
This Supplement was developed by the Technical Committee on Engineering Design in Wood, which is under the jurisdiction of the Standards Steering Committee on Structures, and was formally approved by these committees.
