Preface
This is the sixth edition of CSA O118.1, Western red cedar shakes and shingles. It supersedes the previous edition, published in 1997 under the title Western Cedars Shakes and Shingles. The 1997 edition superseded the previous editions published in 1988 and 1980 under the designation CSA O118.1 and in 1963 and 1953 under the designation CSA O118.
This Standard specifies grading, manufacturing, packaging, labelling, and conformity assessment requirements for western red cedar shakes and shingles and applies to the following products:
(a) handsplit, handsplit-and-resawn, and tapersawn shakes;
(b) shingles;
(c) remanufactured shakes and shingles;
(d) specialty products; and
(e) hip-and-ridge units.
Although the shakes and shingles covered by this Standard are primarily manufactured from western red cedar, this Standard also applies to shakes and shingles manufactured from Alaska cedar.
Unlike previous editions of this Standard, this edition is written in both SI (metric) and yard/pound (imperial) units.
An effort has been made to harmonize certain aspects of this Standard, e.g., terminology, with CSA O118.2-08, Eastern white cedar shingles, and CSA O118.3-93, Northern Pine Tapersawn Shakes.
Major funding for the development of this edition was provided by the Canadian Wood Council on behalf of the BC Shake & Shingle Association, the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau, and their member organizations.
This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Western Red Cedar, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Wood Shingles and Shakes and the Strategic Steering Committee on Forest Products, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. It will be submitted to the Standards Council of Canada for approval as a National Standard of Canada.
