Preface
These requirements represent basic standards for safe operation, substantial and durable construction, and acceptable performance of gas-fired waterless toilets. This is a new type of appliance developed during the later stages of world war II for use of military establishments in out-of-the-way places, and especially in the colder regions of the world where the disposal of human wastes in perpetually frozen ground presented a problem. This problem still exists today. With the renewed interest in the development of the far northern regions of Canada an appliance such as this would seem to have features which would greatly minimize this disposal problem. There are many locations where the use of such an appliance solves a health problem a well as the disposal problem.
There is a new concept here in the use of a high energy flame in which the kinetic energy of the flame is used, as well as the heat energy. Thus we have stirring, drying, incineration, and combustion processes taking place almost simultaneously.
The results of many years of experience of many men, and many organizations interested in the manufacturer, testing, installation, maintenance, inspection and research on appliances and equipment designed for the utilization of gas has gone into the writing of these requirements. These requirements are designed to assure safe and efficient performance and substantial and durable construction of equipment.
Nothing in these requirements is to be considered in any way as indicating a measure of quality beyond compliance with the provisions they contain. They are designed to allow compliance of human waste disposal appliances utilizing gas-fired combustion chambers, the construction and performance of which may exceed the various provisions specified herein. In their preparation full recognition has been given to the possibilities of improvement through ingenuity of design. As progress takes place, revisions may become necessary. When they are believed desirable, recommendations should be forwarded to the Secretary of The Canadian Gas Association, 55 Scarsdale Road, Don Mills, Ontario.
Safe and satisfactory operation of a gas-fired waterless toilet depends to a great extend upon its proper installation. To assure satisfactory performance, appliances complying with these requirements should be installed in accordance with rules and codes of authorities having jurisdiction, and manufacturers' installation instructions.
Scope
1.1.1
The application of these requirements shall be limited to gas-fired waterless toilets which are manufactured, sold and installed as a packaged, completely assembled, unit.
1.1.2
Gas-fired toilets approved under these requirements are intended to be installed in accordance with the Provincial installation requirements or in their absence CSA B149 installation code shall prevail.
1.1.3
Gas-fired toilets approved under these requirements shall be newly produced toilets, constructed entirely of new, unused parts and materials.
1.1.4
Waterless Toilets with sealed combustion system.
A self contained appliance constructed so that all air for combustion is derived from the outside atmosphere and all flue gases are discharged to the outside atmosphere.
