Passenger Ropeways
Product Details
Preface
This is the second edition of CSA Standard Z98 (now CAN3-Z98), Passenger Ropeways, and supersedes the first edition, which was published in 1968 under the title Aerial Passenger Tramways. This edition incorporates the revisions published in Supplement No. 1—1971 and other revisions approved since then, and is written in SI (metric) units.
In this new edition there are several major changes in format:
(a) Clause 6 covers fibre—rope tows only and a new Clause 7 has been added to cover wire—rope tows;
(b) The wire-rope requirements, which are common to all categories of ropeways, are now contained in Clause 3 along with all the other general requirements. The replacement of ropes is now contained in Clause 9, which covers operation and maintenance.
This Standard was prepared by the Technical Committee on Passenger Ropeways under the jurisdiction of the Standards Steering Committee on Lifting, Hoisting and Related Devices and was formally approved by these Committees. It has been approved as a National Standard by the Standards Council of Canada.
Scope
1.1
This Standard establishes safety standards for transportation of passengers on devices that are usually referred to by the following names: aerial ropeways, chair lifts, gondola lifts, T-bar lifts, J—bar lifts, platter lifts (and similar devices), and rope tows.
1.2
This Standard does not cover equipment such as cog railways and cable cars running on rails.
1.3
This Standard may be applied with modifications for hauling freight if approved by the authority having jurisdiction, provided allowance has been made in the design.
1.4
In case of a novel design, or a new configuration that defies precise classification, or instances of existing non—conformance, the authority having jurisdiction may grant exceptions from the literal requirements, but only where it is evident that reasonable safety is assured.
Note: This Standard is in SI (metric) units with Imperial units in the text in parentheses for information only.
