1.1 The purpose of this Standard is to facilitate identification, by class, of drugs in syringes filled by the user that are used in anaesthesia and critical care.
1.2 This Standard specifies design requirements for the size, shape, pattern, type style, and colour of labels applied by or under the direct supervision of the attending physicians to unlabelled syringes, filled by the attending physicians or their agent, to identify the drug content for anaesthesia and critical care by class.
1.3 The use of colour is intended only as an aid in identifying drug groups and does not absolve the user from the duty of reading the label before use in order to correctly identify the specific drug and concentration.
1.4 This Standard is not intended to provide requirements for labels applied by the drug manufacturer.
1.5 In this Standard, shall indicates a mandatory requirement; should indicates a recommendation or that which is advised but not mandatory; may indicates an advisory or optional statement. Notes accompanying Clauses do not include mandatory or alternative requirements. The purpose of a Note accompanying a Clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material that is not properly a part of the Standard. Notes to Figures and Tables are considered to be part of the Figure or Table and are written as mandatory requirements.
