This International Standard lays down requirements for the design qualification and type approval of terrestrial photo-voltaic modules suitable for long-term operation in general open-air climates, as defined in IEC 721-2-1. It applies only to crystalline silicon types. Standards for thin-film modules and other environments, such as marine or equator conditions, are under consideration.
This standard does not apply to modules used with concentrators.
The object of this test sequence is to determine the electrical and thermal characteristics of the module and to show, as far as possible within reasonable constraints of cost and time, that the module is capable of withstanding prolonged exposure in climates described in the scope. The actual lifetime expectancy of modules so qualified will depend on their design, their environment and the conditions under which they are operated.

La présente Norme internationale donne les exigences de la CEI sur la qualification de la conception et l'homologation de modules photovoltaïques pour application terrestre et pour une utilisation de longue durée dans les climats généraux d'air libre, définis dans la CEI 721-2-1. Elle s'applique uniquement aux modules au silicium cristallin. Les normes pour les modules à couche mince et pour d'autres conditions d'environnement, telles que les conditions marines ou à l'equateur, sont à l'étude.
Elle ne s'applique pas aux modules utiloisés avec concentrateurs.
L'objet de cette séquence est de déterminer les caractéristiques électriques et thermiques du module et de montrer autant que possible des contraintes de coût et de temps raissonnables, que le module est apte à supporter une exposition prolongée aux climats définis dans le domaine d'application. L'espérance de vie réelle des modules ainsi qualifiés dépendra de leur conception ainsi que de l'environment et des conditions dans lesquels ils fonctionneront.
