Preface
This is the second edition of CSA Standard CAN/CSA-C282, Emergency Electrical Power Supply for Buildings. It supersedes the first edition, which was published in 1977.
The major changes in this edition are to the following requirements:
(a) the fuel supply for the prime mover (previously Clause 5.3, now Clause 6.4);
(b) safety indications and shutdowns (previously Clause 5.4 and Table 1, now Clause 6.5 and Table 1);
(c) the cranking cycle and power for starting (previously Clause 5.7, now Clauses 6.6 and 6.7);
(d) the manual bypass switch (previously Cluase 7.5, now Clause 8.5);
(e) the initial installation performance tests (Clause 9); and
(f) periodic testing (previously Clause 83, now Clauses 10.3 and 10.4).
This standard was prepared by the CSA Technical Committee on Emergency Electrical Power Supply for Buildings under the jurisdiction of the Steering Committee on Fire Safety and Fuel Burning Equipment, and was formally approved by these Committees. It has been approved as a National Standard of Canada by the Standards Council of Canada.
Scope
1.1
This Standard covers the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of the equipment required to provide emergency electrical power in the event that the normal source of power fails.
1.2
This Standard covers all aspects of the emergency electrical power supply up to and including the automatic transfer switches.
1.3
This Standard does not include the emergency electrical power supply for hospitals; they are covered by CSA Standard Z32.4, Essential Electrical Systems for Hospitals.
1.4
This Standard does not cover emergency supply from batteries.
