Preface
This is the seventh edition of CSA Standard C22.2 No. 31 (now CAN/CSAC22.2 No. 31), Switchgear Assemblies, one of a series of Standards issued by the Canadian Standards Association under Part II of the Canadian Electrical Code. It supersedes previous editions published in 1939, 1958, 1965, 1972, 1977, and 1983.
Requirements have been added to the marking clauses to indicate the equipment's suitability for mounting over combustible surfaces and the equipment's continuous load current. Also, another type of wire has been permitted for internal wiring.

This Standard was prepared by a Subcommittee of the Technical Committee on Industrial Products under the jurisdiction of the Standards Steering Committee on CE Code, Part II, and was formally approved by these Committees. It has been approved as a National Standard of Canada by the Standards Council of Canada.
Scope
1.1
This Standard applies to indoor open and enclosed and outdoor enclosed assemblies of switchgear devices such as switches, interrupting devices, air circuit breakers, power circuit breakers, and control, metering, protective, and regulating equipment with associa•ted interconnections and supporting structures, in nominal voltages of 46 kV and less, intended to be used in accordance with the Rules of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, in nonhazardous locations, for controlling and protecting the power from generators or other sources and supplying electrical energy to power and lighting circuits.

This Standard does not apply to panelboards, industrial control equipment, switchboards for communication circuits (see Canadian Electrical Code, Part I), or low voltage assemblies consisting of separately supported enclosed switches, enclosed circuit breakers, and possibly service meters, with interconnection between them enclosed in raceways.
Note: Manufacturers and installers of switchgear assemblies approved under this Standard should take due note of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, with respect to the location of switchgear devices in areas where certain components may not be acceptable in such locations.
1.3
Clauses 1 to 6 apply to all switchgear assemblies and are supplemented and amended as follows:
(a) by Clause 7 for low voltage switchgear assemblies; and
(b) by Clause 8 for high voltage switchgear assemblies.
