Preface
This is the first edition of CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 297, Solid dielectric switchgear, one of a series of Standards issued by CSA Group under Part II of the Canadian Electrical Code.
Depending on the product application, there may be limitations on the applicability of this Standard as outlined in Clause 0.
Except as described in Clause 9, specifically for overhead fault interrupters, requirements for fault interrupters have not been included in this edition. Requirements for fault interrupters will be added to this Standard as a separate section once the requirements for these products have been finalized by the industry.
For general information on the Standards of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part II, see the Preface of CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 0, General Requirements — Canadian Electrical Code, Part II.
This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard.
This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Solid Dielectric Switchgear, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Industrial Products, and the Strategic Steering Committee on Requirements for Electrical Safety, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee.
This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.
Scope
1.1
This Standard applies to switchgear insulated with solid dielectric material including devices such as
a) switches;
b) interrupting devices, including reclosers;
c) circuit breakers; and
d) control, metering, protective, and regulating equipment with associated interconnections and supporting structures.
1.2
This Standard applies to equipment with a nominal voltage greater than 750 V and up to 46 kV that is intended to be used
a) in accordance with CSA C22.1, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I;
b) in non-hazardous locations for indoor or outdoor use;
c) for controlling and protecting the power from generators or other sources; and
d) for supplying electrical energy to power and lighting circuits.
1.3
This Standard does not apply to air insulated switchgear or gas-insulated switchgear that is covered by CSA C22.2 No. 31.
1.4
Except for the requirements applicable to overhead fault interrupters as specified in Clause 9, fault interrupters are not within the scope of this Standard.
1.5
In this Standard, shall is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; should is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and may is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard.
Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.
Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.
