1.1 General This Standard covers asphalt intended for use as hot cement and top coat in the construction of built-up coverings on roof decks of various types and slopes and in the construction of waterproofing systems.
1.2 Types The following types of asphalts are covered by this Standard: (a) Type 1 - asphalt for use on built-up roofs with slopes less than or equal to 1:16 and for use as waterproofing below ground level when not exposed to surface temperatures above 25°C (77°F); (b) Type 2 - asphalt for use on built-up roofs with slopes less than or equal to 1:8 or for use as waterproofing above ground level on vertical surfaces not exposed to direct sunlight; (c) Type 3 - asphalt for use on built-up roofs with slopes less than or equal to 1:4 for exposed applications or for use as waterproofing above ground level on vertical surfaces not exposed to direct sunlight.
Notes: (1) Where slopes are indicated, they are offered as a guide only and their modification may be necessary for specific service conditions. (2) When asphalts covered by this Standard are used for waterproofing, the recommended procedure for their application should be in accordance with CGSB Standard 37-GP-37M.
