Course Overview
The Qualified Medical Gas Operator training will enable healthcare organizations to maintain, operate and trouble shoot medical gas pipelines. Designed to provide health care facility engineers and maintenance staff with the knowledge of how applicable CSA Group standards impact the design, maintenance and operation of Medical Gas Pipeline Systems. Participants will gain insight into applying the Standard for improved safety on the job.
Learning Objectives
After taking this course, you will be able to:
- Recognize the characteristics of the medical gas system within the facility you work in.
- Identify the process, people involved and resources needed to investigate an issue with a medical gas systems pressure.
- Explain how you would replace area alarm panels in a facility without disrupting medical gas service in any way.
- Describe a plan to successfully change regional gas suppliers.
- Identify what topics and message would benefit clinical staff for a training on medical gases.
- Recognize examples of incorrect medical gas system installations.
- Discuss requirements in CSA Z7396.1 for shutdowns of medical gas systems.
- Examine real world incidents due to a failure in the medical gas system or facility staff.

Course Outline
- Review of the basics and how they apply
- Knowing what is in your facility
- What does day to day look like for a Qualified Operator
- Create, coordinate PM’s; SOP’s coordinate repairs; cylinder management; warranty inspections; compliance; documentation on work performed
- What is involved with on-site production
- Focus on quality initiatives which is part of current and future Standards and is a standalone/significant topic
- Keeping systems safe and operational
- Interact with Qualified Technicians, bottle & bulk suppliers, installers, manufacturers, healthcare staff
- Impacts of construction
- Review/approve designs/work; agencies; manage upgrades to systems; compliance; participate in inspections; feedback on designs/work proposals
- What to do when things happen
- What are the roles? Risk Assessment; shut downs/tie-ins, back up gases; agencies; documentation, emergency response programs including an understanding of how medical gases are used in patient therapies.

Each Attendee participates in the live, instructor-led sessions via a dedicated desktop or laptop. Chromebooks, Tablets and Mobiles are not compatible to the CSA Group’s Webex Training sessions.
