Concrete Materials and Methods of Concrete Construction/Methods of Test for Concrete
Product Details
Preface
This combined new edition of CSA Standards A23.1, Concrete Materials and Methods of Concrete Construction, and A23.2, Methods of Test for Concrete, supersedes previous editions published in 1977, 1973, 1967, 1960, 1942, and 1929. These Standards are part of the CSA A23 Series on Concrete and Reinforced Concrete.
CSA Standards CAN3—A23.4—M78, Precast Concrete — Materials and Construction, and CAN/CSA-A23.5-M86, Supplementary Cementing Materials, are published separately. Emphasis in this issue has been placed on the durability requirements for concrete. This Standard presents these requirements in a composite form for the full range of exposure conditions. Related new test methods have been added to the A23.2 Standard.
Many of the changes incorporated in this edition represent evolving technology. Examples are the requirements for flatness and levelness of concrete surfaces and the optional requirements for surface waviness. There is also the introduction of in—place strength, testing for such purposes as determining the time for form removal, post—tensioning and cessation of curing.
The contents of A23.1 and A23.2 are based on the principle that the document should be self— contained for use in the field. To accomplish this, portions of other Standards have been included.
The Committee includes representatives from most geographical areas of Canada and from all sectors of the industry. concrete producers, specifying and regulatory authorities, materials consultants, teachers, and researchers. Fourteen meetings were held to prepare the Standards.
The Committee intends to review and update the Standards on a continuing basis and to maintain a close liaison with the CSA Technical Committee on Reinforced Concrete Design.
These Standards were prepared by the CSA Technical Committee on Concrete Materials under the jurisdiction of the Standards Steering Committee- on Concrete and were formally approved by these Committees. They were approved as National Standards of Canada by the Standards Council of Canada.

CAN/CSA—A23.l-M90 - Concrete Materials and Methods of Concrete Construction
Scope
1.1 General
This Standard covers materials and methods of construction for cast-in-place concrete and also for concrete precast in the field.
Notes:
(1) Design of concrete structures is covered in CSA Standard CAN3-A23.3, Design of Concrete Structures for Buildings; or CSA Standard S6, Design of Highway Bridges; or CSA Standard S29, Concrete Railway Bridges. Design of some specialty concrete products is covered in separate CSA Standards.
(2) Methods of test for concrete are covered in CSA Standard CAN/CSA-A23.2, Methods of Test for Concrete.
(3) Design provisions governing the fire resistance of reinforced concrete structures are covered in the National
Building Code of Canada.
1.2 Precast Concrete
Plant production of precast concrete is covered in CSA Standard CAN3-A23.4, Precast Concrete—Materials and Construction.
1.3 Precasting of Concrete in the Field
Precasting of concrete in the field or in a temporary plant shall be governed by this Standard or CSA Standard CAN3-A23.4, at the option of the Owner.
Notes:
(1) Guidelines for such a choice are provided in CSA Standard CAN3-A23.4.
(2) Precasting operations in the field normally governed by this Standard, such as tilt-up construction, are covered in Clause 27, Precast Concrete in the Field.
1.4 Approval for Equivalents
This Standard does not specifically cover the use of proprietary materials or methods of construction. They may be permitted by the Owner under a separate specification providing that the quality of the resulting construction meets the minimum requirements of this Standard.

CAN/CSA—A232-M9O - Methods of Test for Concrete
Scope
1.1 General
This Standard covers the principal methods of test for hardened and freshly mixed concrete and for concrete materials, as specified in CSA Standards A23.1 and A23.4.
