Standards for Concrete Pipe
Product Details
Preface
The A257 Series, comprising four Standards, is a new Series of CSA Standards on concrete pipe covering test methods, nonreinforced pipe, reinforced pipe, and concrete joints and gaskets.
CSA Standard A257.0, Methods for Determining Physical Properties of Concrete Pipe or Tile, which is based on ASTM Standard C497, covers test procedures for external load crushing strength testing, core strength testing, absorption testing, hydrostatic testing, and permeability testing.
CSA Standard A257.1, Concrete Sewer, Storm Drain and Culvert Pipe, which is based on ASTM Standard C14, covers two strength classifications of nonreinforced concrete pipe intended to be used for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, storm water and for culvert construction.
CSA Standard A257.2, Reinforced Concrete Culvert, Storm Drain and Sewer Pipe, which is based on ASTM Standard C76, covers five strength classifications of reinforced concrete pipe intended to be used for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, storm water and for culvert construction.
CSA Standard A257.3, Joints for Circular Concrete Sewer and Culvert Pipe Using Rubber Gaskets, which is based on ASTM Standard C443, covers flexible watertight joints for circular concrete sewer and culvert pipe, using rubber gaskets, where infiltration or exfiltration is a factor in the design.
These Standards were prepared by the Committee on Concrete Pipe under the jurisdiction of the Sectional Committee on Concrete and were formally approved by these Committees.

A257.0—1974 - Methods for Determining Physical Properties of Concrete Pipe or Tile
Scope
1.1
This Standard, which covers procedures for testing concrete pipe and tile, includes the following tests:
(a) External Load Crushing Strength Test;
(b) Core Strength Test;
(c) Absorption Test;
(d) Hydrostatic Test; and
(e) Permeability Test.
NOTE: Metric Equivalents. The metric equivalents given in this Standard, both in the text and in the Tables, are included for information only.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A257.1—1974 - Concrete Sewer, Storm Drain and Culvert Pipe
Scope
1.1 Scope
This Standard covers nonreinforced concrete pipe intended to be used for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, storm water, and for the construction of culverts.
1.2 Classifications
This Standard covers two strength classifications as follows:
(a) Standard Strength; and
(b) Extra Strength.
NOTE: Metric Equivalents. The metric equivalents given in this Standard both in the text and in the Tables, are included for information only.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A257.2—1974 - Reinforced Concrete Culvert, Storm Drain and Sewer Pipe
Scope
1.1 Scope
This Standard covers circular reinforced concrete pipe intended to be used for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, and storm water, and for the construction of culverts.
1.2 Classification
This Standard covers five strength classifications as follows:
(a) Class I;
(b) Class II;
(c) Class III;
(d) Class IV; and
(e) Class V.
The corresponding strength requirements are prescribed in Tables 1 to 5.
NOTES: 1. Pipe Intended for Jacking. This Standard does not cover pipe which is intended to be used for jacking longitudinally in tunnel operations. Such pipe requires special design to withstand the longitudinal loading anticipated and the purchaser should inform the manufacturer when pipe are to be so used.
2. Metric Equivalents. The metric equivalents given in this Standard, both in the text and in the Tables, are included for information only.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A257.3-1974 - Joints for Circular Concrete Sewer and Culvert Pipe Using Rubber Gaskets
Scope
1.1
This Standard covers flexible watertight joints for circular concrete sewer and culvert pipe, using rubber gaskets, where infiltration or exfiltration is a factor in the design.
1.2
This Standard is intended to cover the design of joints and the requirements for rubber gaskets to be used therewith for pipe conforming in all other respects to CSA Standards A257.1, Concrete Sewer, Storm Drain and Culvert Pipe and A2572, Reinforced Concrete Culvert, Storm Drain and Sewer Pipe, provided that if there is conflict in permissible variations in dimensions the requirements of this Standard for joints shall govern.
NOTES: 1. Joints covered by this Standard are normally adequate for hydrostatic pressures up to 30 feet (9.14 m) without leakage when field tested. Infiltration or exfiltration quantities for an installed pipe line are dependent upon many factors other than joints.
2. The allowable infiltration specified by the user should distinguish between infiltration allowances for sanitary and storm sewers and should recognize the normal elevation of the water table at the installation site.
3. Metric Equivalents. The metric equivalents given in this Standard, both in the text and in the Tables, are included for information only.
