Preface
This is the third edition of No. 42 of a series of Specifications issued by the Canadian Standards Association under Part II of the Canadian Electrical Code. It supersedes the second edition issued in 1942 and re-affirmed in 1950. The first edition was published in 1937.
This Specification was prepared under the jurisdiction of the Committee on CE Code, Part II, which. is subsidiary to the Committee on CE Code, Part I, and was formally approved by these Committees and the CSA Technical Council.
Scope
1.1
This Specification applies to:
(a) Attachment plugs (caps and adapters), receptacles, cord connectors, motor-attachment plugs, and current taps of the domestic or general-use types, rated at 60 amperes and less, 250 volts and less; and
(b) Receptacles and plugs of the industrial type, rated at 200 amperes and less, 600 volts and less, all designed to be used in accordance with the rules of Canadian Electrical Code, Part I.

The devices covered by this Specification are intended for use in making readily detachable electrical connection between supply circuits and portable lamps, appliances, and similar equipment.
1.3
This Specification does not apply to:
(a) Receptacles and pull-off plugs for electrothermal appliances; and
(b) Receptacles, plugs, connectors, and adapters intended for use in hazardous locations.
