Course Overview
This course is part of the CSA Group Modular Online Training Program. This online course provides an overview of Section 34 in the 2021 Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1. Rather than reviewing the Code in its entirety, this course is designed to provide an overview of Section 34 of the CE Code.
Section 34 applies to signs and outline lighting in which the sources of light are
a) incandescent lamps;
b) fluorescent lamps;
c) high-voltage luminous discharge tubes, commonly known as cold-cathode or neon tubes;
d) high-intensity discharge lamps; and
e) other light-emitting sources, such as LEDs.
A certificate of achievement is provided upon completion of the course.
For nearly 90 years, the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I has been and continues to be a comprehensive model Code that provides guidance to help make electrical installations and equipment safer.
Learning Objectives
After taking this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the general requirements in Section 34 specifically disconnecting means, location-typical sign installation, bonding, protection of sign leads.
- Describe the requirements of disconnecting means.
- Identify the safety measurements for personnel working on a sign.
- Recognize the expectations of bonding to ground requirements for signs.
- Identify the requirements for enclosures that house electrical equipment for a sign.
- Recall the limit to open circuit voltage ratings due to the corona effect.
- Describe how the corona effect impacts high voltage wiring methods.
