This is the first edition of CSA P.10, Performance of integrated mechanical systems for residential heating and ventilation. This Standard was developed to meet a recognized need for evaluating the performance of a new class of integrated products that provide space heating, potable water heating, ventilation with heat recovery, air circulation, and distribution of fresh air.
This Standard specifies procedures for evaluating the performance of the core functions of an integrated mechanical system (IMS) as well as the overall performance of the system. All tests are performed using the same basic test set-up and ambient temperature and, as a result, this Standard includes new testing approaches and new metrics.
Two new metrics were developed to characterize the performance of integrated mechanical systems. The overall thermal performance factor (OTPF) and annual electricity consumption (AE) are aggregate performance ratings based on the results of space heating, water heating, and ventilation performance tests. Annex A specifies the minimum performance requirements for an IMS and Annex B specifies the premium performance requirements. Annex D describes the rationales behind the new testing approaches used in this Standard. Annex E describes a procedure for determining the tank thermocouple positions on a probe in order to establish the mean temperature of water in a storage tank. Its aim is to promote the repeatability of test results for storage-tank-based systems.

This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Integrated Mechanical Systems, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Gas Appliances and Related Accessories and the Strategic Steering Committee on Fuel-Burning Equipment, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee.
This Standard describes the test procedures, apparatus, and calculations required to determine the performance, capacities, energy consumption, and overall efficiency of residential gas-fired integrated mechanical systems that perform all of the following functions:
(a) space heating;
(b) potable water heating;
(c) ventilation with heat recovery; and
(d) air circulation and distribution of fresh air.
Note: For the purposes of this Standard, integrated mechanical systems are divided into three types (see Clause 6.1.2).
This Standard establishes laboratory methods for testing and rating the overall thermal and electrical performance of an integrated mechanical system (IMS) using a consistent test set-up and ambient temperature.
IMS performance is characterized by two performance descriptors that consolidate measurements for each operating mode to provide annual thermal and electrical performance ratings. The ventilation and water heating loads that are incorporated into the overall ratings are standardized, whereas the space heating loads that are incorporated into the overall ratings are based on the space heating capacity of the individual IMS.
In CSA Standards, shall is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; should is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; may is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard; and can is used to express possibility or capability.
Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.
Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.
Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
