In the Introduction to Hazardous Locations (HazLoc) course, participants will gain foundational knowledge in safety considerations for hazardous environments. The course covers essential topics, including area classification, properties of flammable materials, sources of ignition, methods of protection, applicable standards and codes, and groupings and temperature classes.

Upon completion, participants will have a solid foundation for safety practices in hazardous areas and will also receive a Certificate of Completion.

Note: Please note that this training course is currently only conducted in English.

Learning Objectives
After taking this course, participants will obtain a better understanding of the following areas:

  • Area Classification: Participants will learn to define and understand area classification, identifying hazardous zones based on the presence of flammable materials.
  • Properties of Flammable Materials: The course outlines the characteristics of flammable substances, emphasizing their potential risks in hazardous locations.
  • Sources of Ignition: Participants will identify and define various sources of ignition that can lead to hazardous incidents.
  • Methods of Protection: Understanding protective measures is crucial. The course covers methods to mitigate risks, such as explosion-proof equipment and containment.
  • Standards and Codes: Participants will explore certification standards and codes specific to hazardous locations.
  • Groupings and Temperature Classes: The course defines groupings (based on material properties) and temperature classes (based on ignition temperatures) relevant to hazardous environments.

Instructor Information
Andrew Redeker, a Certified Electronics Technologist at CSA Group, brings over three decades of expertise to his role. His career journey within the organization has been marked by significant milestones. Starting as a lab technician in 1991, Andrew transitioned to a certifier by 1993, specializing in certifying products within the Hazardous Locations (HazLoc) group. In 2001, he assumed the role of a Certification Specialist, focusing on validating the safety and compliance of Hazloc products. From 2018 onwards, Andrew took on mentoring responsibilities for Hazloc certifiers and conducted meticulous reviews of projects within the Operations and Engineering Support group (OESG). Currently, Andrew contributes to external customer training within the Technical Training and Support (TTS) group, leveraging his wealth of experience to enhance customers’ knowledge and compliance efforts.

Goutam Das, a Certification Specialist at CSA Group, has over 15 years of experience in assessing and testing electrical and electronic equipment intended for use in HazLoc environments. He has extensive knowledge of cCSAus, UKEx, ATEX, IECEx, and other HazLoc approvals for gas and dust atmospheres. In addition to providing technical reviews, Goutam mentors CSA Group certifiers and educates customers on the requirements of applicable standards. He also has a master’s degree in technology.
