COVERAGE:

Polyethylene pipe, tubing and fittings for use in gas mains and services, including gathering, transmission and distribution applications. Plastic to metal transition fittings are also included.

NOTE:

The hydrostatic design basis for these products is established using water in/air out, and this would not be valid for all gases. Users must evaluate the appropriateness of the piping system for use with different gases.

The above Standard may also require the use of associated Bulletins, Notices and/or Supplements due, for example, to new requirements becoming effective after publication of the Standard.

MARKING:

All marking required by CSA must be permanent, legible, and located where readily accessible for review after manufacture of the pipe and fittings. The contents consist of:

On pipe and tubing:

  • manufacturer's identification;
  •  resin name or type;
  •  PE material designation code (eg, PE2708, PE4710 etc.)
  •  nominal size;
  •  coil number;
  •  standard dimension ratio (SDR) on pipe, wall thickness on tubing;
  •  production date code;
  •  "PIPE" or "TUBING" or "IPS" or "CTS";
  •  "GAS";
  •  "CSA B137.4:23" (CSA standard designation, including the year of the edition used for testing;
  •  CSA Mark.
  • 16 character gas distribution component tracking and traceability id in accordance with ASTM F2897 (can be either alphanumeric code 128 barcode format or 1D or 2D barcode symbology as agreed upon between the manufacturer and end user. 

The marking is applied using indent print method. The marking shall be deep enough that when the ink is removed, the marking shall still be fully legible.

On fittings:

  • manufacturer's identification;
  •  the generic plastic symbol with resin name or code (on plastic fittings);
  •  nominal size;
  •  "CSA B137.4:23" or CSA B137.4.1:23 (as applicable) (CSA standard designation and year of the edition used for testing;
  •  product date code (electrofusion fittings only);
  •  CSA Mark
  • 16 character gas distribution component tracking and traceability id in accordance with ASTM F2897 (can be either alphanumeric code 128 barcode format or 1D or 2D barcode symbology as agreed upon between the manufacturer and end user. (applies to B137.4 fittings only)
