HEATERS - Cable and Cable Sets

COVERAGE:

Heating cables, cable sets, and surface heating device sets for use on system
voltages not exceeding 750 V for installation in accordance with the Canadian
Electrical Code, Part I.
Heating devices installed on or in metal and non-metallic pipes, tanks, vessels,
and related equipment and various surface heating applications.

Typical applications include

  1. the protection of pipes, tanks, and vessels, including fire protection
    systems, from freezing;
  2. maintaining required temperatures on process equipment, including pipes,
    tanks, and vessels;
  3. earth thermal storage;
  4. hot water temperature maintenance;
  5. surface heating in or under surfaces;
  6. snow melting; and
  7. de-icing of roofs and gutters.

This product Class does not include devices intended to heat or to stress
relieve pipes or vessels using eddy current, skin effect, or electric current
passed directly through the pipe or vessel wall.

This product Class does not include radiant space heating devices or space
heating requirements.

This product Class does not cover heating elements using carbon ink
dispersion.

Heating cable sets may be intended for:

  • cord or permanent connection;
  • commercial, industrial and residential applications;
  • outdoor or indoor use.

CSA C22.2 No. 130-03 Requirements for Electrical Resistance Trace Heating and
Heating Device Sets

 MARKING:

  1. Packaging

The original carton, container, spool, or reel in or on which the heating
device or heating device set leaves the factory shall be clearly marked with
the following information:

  1. the manufacturer's name, trademark, or other recognized symbol of
    identification;
  2. the catalogue number, reference number, or model;
  3. date code or equivalent;
  4. the maximum voltage for which the heating device or heating device set
    is intended;
  5. the maximum rated current or, for factory-assembled heating device sets,
    the total wattage;
  6. additional markings as may be required

  1. Factory-Assembled Heating Device Sets

Factory-assembled heating device sets shall be provided with a durable
tag permanently attached to the products within 75 mm of the power
connection or power-connection fitting and marked with the following
information:

  1. the manufacturer's name, trademark, or other recognized symbol of
    identification;
  2. the catalogue number, reference number, or model;
  3. date code or equivalent;
  4. the rated voltage; current and/or the total wattage;
  5. the word "series" or "parallel", as applicable; and
  6. additional markings as may be required

  1. Field-Assembled Heating Device Sets

3.1 Heating Devices

Heating devices intended for field assembly shall be clearly and permanently
marked with the following information:

  1. the manufacturer's name, trademark, or other recognized symbol of
    identification;
  2. the catalogue number, reference number, or model;
  3. date code or equivalent;
  4. the word "series" or "parallel" and the usage marking
  5. the rated voltage and the maximum permissible steady-state current.
  6. additional markings as may be required

3.2 Connections and Termination Components

The cartons or containers and the instructions of all connection and termination
kits shall be clearly marked with the following information:

  1. the manufacturer's name, trademark, or other recognized symbol of
    identification;
  2. the catalogue number, reference number, or model;
  3. the maximum permissible steady-state current and rated voltage;
  4. maximum temperature continuous exposure;
  5. additional markings as may be required

  1.  Installation Instructions

4.1 General

The manufacturer shall provide complete instructions for the installation and
maintenance of the heating device and a statement that the heating device set
must be installed in accordance with applicable codes. Instructions shall also
include caution or warning notices that are specific to the heating device and
its intended use.

4.2 Factory-Assembled Heating Device Sets

Instructions shall include any restrictions regarding alteration of sets.

4.3 Field Assembly of Heating Devices

Instructions shall include the following:

  1. a list of the components of the heating device set;
  2. the maximum length of the heating device;
  3. the recommended size of the overcurrent protective device;
  4. the order, preparation, and method of assembling all components; and
  5. explanation of specific applications.
