Preface
In 1937 the first edition of a CSA Safety Code for Elevators was published to meet a desire for uniform provincial legislation governing safety requirements for elevators. In keeping with advances made in the manufacture and use of elevating devices, the code was periodically amended and eventually it covered elevators, dumbwaiters, and escalators. In 1963 the Committee responsible for this Code decided that hoists used to carry workmen and materials during construction of buildmgs and other structures, and which are dismantled on completion of construction, should be covered by a safety code. The Committee recommended that a code be developed on safety requirements for workmen's hoists, separate from CSA Standard B44, Safety Code for Elevators, Dumbwaiters, Escalators. A survey conducted by CSA confirmed the need for such a Standard and a committee was organized to prepare CSA Standard 2185, Safety Code for Workmen's Hoists.
As Z185 was being developed, it soon became obvious that a separate Standard was required to cover hoists used for carrying materials only, distinct from those used to carry workmen. The newly formed Committee was not representative of interests in the material hoist field. Not all manufacturers made both types. Furthermore, in some provinces the Department of Labour has jurisdiction over hoists used for carrying workmen, while material hoists are the responsibility of the Workmen's Compensation Board. It was, therefore, decided to organize a separate committee to prepare a standard on safety requirements for material hoists.
This Standard was prepared by the Committee on Material Hoists, under the jurisdiction of the Sectional Committee on Safety Codes, and was formally approved by these committees.
