Preface
This Specification has been prepared with a view to its general adoption throughout Canada, under widely differing local conditions. For this reason the widest latitude deemed advisable has been left to the Engineer in its application and amplification.
Although drafted primarily for riveted structures, this Specification is applicable to Bridges to be constructed by the metal-arc welding process in which case the requirements and modifications of the clauses relating to welding shall apply.
This Specification was formally approved by letter ballot by the Committee on Steel Highway Bridges in January, 1952, by the Sectional Committee on Steel Construction in April, 1952 and by the CSA Main Committee, with authority to publish it as a CSA Standard, in July, 1952.
Scope
This Specification is intended to apply, primarily, to simple-span highway bridges of 300 feet or less, including those carrying street cars or freight cars with locomotives in addition to the regular highway traffic. It may be used, however, in designing simple-span bridges of greater length than 300 feet, as well as other types, including cantilever bridges, continuous bridges, arch bridges, etc., in which case, the Engineer shall provide such supplementary clauses as may be required for the particular type of structure planned.
