This is the second edition of CSA Special Publication S473.1, Commentary to CSA Standard CAN/CSA-S473-92, Steel Structures, which is part of the five Standards comprising the CSA Code for the Design, Construction, and Installation of Fixed Offshore Structures. It supersedes the first edition published in 1989.
The purpose of this Commentary is to assist the engineer in the application of the provisions of CSA Standard CAN/CSA-S473, Steel Structures, which is part of the Code for the Design, Construction, and Installation of Fixed Offshore Production Structures, hereinafter called the Standard. Where deemed appropriate some background to the requirements is given and/or procedures which may be used to satisfy the intent of the requirements are suggested. While it is not the intent of the Commentary to provide a detailed resume of the studies and research data reviewed by the Committee in formulating the provisions of the Standard, references to some of the research data are provided. In addition, references which are useful in implementing the provisions of the Standard are given.
The Clause headings and numbers used in this Commentary correspond to those in the Standard. Hence the Commentary should be used in conjunction with the Standard. Not all clauses have commentary.
