S39-1935
Mild Structural Steel
Product Details
Preface
In previously issued specifications dealing with steel bridges and buildings it has been customary to include a series of appendices covering the materials used. As there have been considerable changes in the situation with regard to the manufacture of steel, it has now been decided to recognize steels of different tensile strengths, particularly those higher than have been previously used. At the present time, only four specifications covering mild steel, medium steel, silicon steel and rivet steel are being issued in revised editions in this pamphlet form. It is proposed to follow these with specifications for higher strength steel and for higher strength rivets, and also specifications dealing with structural welding. It is felt that specifications in this pamphlet form will be more useful and arrangements have been made to issue at the same time a special folder for filing purposes.
The four specifications (S 39, S 40, S 41 and S 42), which are now issued have been prepared after a thorough study of specifications prepared by the British Standards Institution and by the American Society for Testing Materials, the form, however, following that of the A.S.T.M. specifications to which reference is made at the beginning of each specification.
It is proposed shortly to make revisions to existing C.E.S.A. Specifications for Bridges and Buildings, in order to take advantage of the higher strength steel now specified which will allow the use of higher working stresses.
It is believed that these specifications will serve a practical purpose in the field of steel Construction, the personnel of which is indicated herewith. Under this new sectional committee, a Sub-committee on Procedure, Standards and Specifications has been charged with the duty of preparing the detailed specifications as they are required.
These first four specifications were approved by the Sub-committee in March, 1935, by the Sectional Committee on Steel Construction in April, 1935, and by the Main Committee with authority to publish in October, 1935.
Scope
This Specification applies to rolled steel plates, shapes and bars. It does not apply to eyebars or rivet steel.
