Preface
This is the second edition of CSA P.6, Test method for measuring thermal efficiency of gas-fired pool heaters. It supersedes the previous edition, published in 1993 by the Canadian Gas Association under the title Testing Method for Measuring Thermal and Operating Efficiencies of Gas-Fired Pool Heaters.
The test method specified in this Standard for gas-fired pool heaters was developed by the Canadian Standards Association, with funding from the Ontario Ministry of Energy.
This Standard includes improvements to stack temperature, gas sampling equipment, and methods currently under evaluation for vented gas fireplaces. This Standard should be considered as improving the accuracy, without changing the intent, of ANSI Z21.56/CSA 4.7, upon which this Standard is based.
In 1990, ANSI Z21.56 specified an increase in the thermal efficiency of convection-type and other-than-convection-type pool heaters, from 75% to 78%. The US Code of Federal Regulations, Title 10, Chapter II, Part 430.32(k), which reflects this 78% efficiency level, is reproduced in Annex A.
This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Energy Efficiency of Gas-Fired Pool Heaters, under the jurisiction of the Technical Committee on Gas Appliances and Related Accessories and the Strategic Steering Committee on Fuel Burning Equipment, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee.
Scope
1.1
This Standard specifies the test method for measuring the thermal efficiency of gas-fired swimming pool heaters.
1.2
This Standard applies to newly produced pool heaters (constructed entirely of new parts and materials) for heating, with either natural gas or liquefied petroleum, non-potable water stored at atmospheric pressure.
1.3
This Standard applies to the following pool heaters:
(a) close proximity;
(b) coil type;
(c) condensing;
(d) direct;
(e) indirect;
(f) other-than-convection type; and
(g) tank type.
1.4
This Standard does not apply to the construction and performance of gas-fired pool heaters.
Note: The construction and performance of gas-fired pool heaters are addressed in ANSI Z21.56/CSA 4.7.
1.5
In CSA Standards, shall is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; should is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; may is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard; and can is used to express possibility or capability.
Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.
Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.
Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
1.6
The values given in SI (metric) units are the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.
