Overview
With the validation process well underway, and a change in name, the ORNAC Standards, Guidelines, and Position Statements for Registered Nurses, 13th edition - 2017 is an exciting, transformational document.
Two sections: Section 3-Perioperative Phases of Care and Section 4-Risk Management/Occupational Health and Safety, inform perioperative nurses about best practice guidelines for their patients, themselves and the teams they work with.
New to this edition are the ORNAC Levels of Evidence© table, more comprehensive reference lists, additions relating to the Safe Surgery Checklist, Accreditation Canada - Required Operational Practices (ROPs), diagrams, figures and illustrations to enhance understanding and decision making.
Sections 3 and 4 of the 13th edition see on page changes in the presentation of practice statements, their rationales, and reference sections where the level of evidence has been identified.

Scope
The primary objective of the Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada is to ...promote high standards of operating room nursing practice in order to promote quality nursing care in Canada (Article 2.03. (i) Bylaws). The present document, which presents recommended standards for perioperative nursing, represents the Association's response to this objective and reflects ORNAC's motto - Promoting Excellence.
