Scope

1.1

This Standard covers two grades (A and B) of steel plates, shapes, and bars intended for welded* or bolted construction.

*Welding technique is important and it is necessary that all welding procedures be suitable for this steel and the intended service.

1.2

Maximum material thicknesses covered by this Standard are:

Grade A - 1% inches;

Grade B - 4 inches.

For shapes, thickness refers to nominal flange thickness.

NOTES:

1 - For general construction, Grade A material to 1% inches inclusive in thickness and Grade B material over 1% inches to 4 inches inclusive in thickness are applicable. Grade B material is more appropriate for all thicknesses for more critical applications in low temperature service, such as dynamically loaded members.

2 - Average notch toughness properties and weldable of CSA G40.12 material can be expected to be slightly inferior to average values for CSA G40.8 material in comparable thicknesses and grades.
