CSA Preface
This is the second edition of CSA ISO 17225-7, Solid biofuels — Fuel specifications and classes — Part 7: Graded non-woody briquettes, which is an adoption without modification of the identically titled ISO (International Organization for Standardization) Standard 17225-7 (second edition, 2021-07). It supersedes the previous edition published in 2015 as CSA ISO 17225-7 (adopted ISO 17225-7:2014).
For brevity, this Standard will be referred to as CSA ISO 17225-7 throughout.
The main changes since the previous edition are as follows:
• Figure 1 has been changed;
• Class A has been split into two classes, A1 and A2, in Table 1;
• chlorine value has been changed in Class A2 of Table 1;
• arsenic value has been changed in Class B of Table 1; and
• ash melting behaviour has been added as an informative property for Table 1.
This Standard is one of a series of Standards developed by ISO/TC 238 on Solid Biofuels that are being adopted by CSA Group under the series Solid biofuels — Fuel specifications and classes, which consists of the following:
a) ISO 17225-1, Part 1: General requirements;
b) ISO 17225-2, Part 2: Graded wood pellets;
c) ISO 17225-3, Part 3: Graded wood briquettes;
d) ISO 17225-4, Part 4: Graded wood chips;
e) ISO 17225-5, Part 5: Graded firewood;
f) ISO 17225-6, Part 6: Graded non-woody pellets; and
g) ISO 17225-7, Part 7: Graded non-woody briquettes.
This Standard is intended to be used in conjunction with CSA ISO 17225-1:24, Solid biofuels — Fuel specifications and classes — Part 1: General requirements (adopted ISO 17225-1:2021).
This Standard was reviewed for Canadian adoption by the CSA Technical Committee on Solid Biofuels, under the jurisdiction of the CSA Strategic Steering Committee on Fuel Burning Equipment, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee.
This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.
Scope
This document determines the fuel quality classes and specifications of graded non-woody briquettes. This document covers only non-woody briquettes produced from the following raw materials (see ISO 17225-1:2021, Table 1):
— 2 Herbaceous biomass
— 3 Fruit biomass
— 4 Aquatic biomass
— 5 Biomass blends and mixtures
NOTE 1 Herbaceous biomass originates from plants that have a non-woody stem and which die back at the end of the growing season. It includes grains or seeds crops from food production or processing industry and their by-products such as cereals.
NOTE 2 Blends and mixtures include blends and mixtures from the main origin-based solid biofuel groups woody biomass, herbaceous biomass, fruit biomass and aquatic biomass.
Blends are intentionally mixed biofuels, whereas mixtures are unintentionally mixed biofuels. The origin of the blend and mixture is to be described using ISO 17225-1:2021, Table 1.
If solid biofuel blend or mixture contains chemically treated material it shall be stated.
NOTE 3 Thermally treated biomass briquettes (e.g. torrefied briquettes) are not included in the scope of this document.
