1.1 This Standard deals with systems that are intended to collect and remove waste anesthetic gases and vapors released from equipment used in administering anesthetics under normal operating conditions or exhaled by a patient when connected to such equipment.
1.2 This Standard does not deal with maintenance and test programs designed to minimize the release of anesthetic agents from the sources identified in Clause 1.1 or from other equipment at an anesthetizing location. Note: See Appendix B for a discussion of the subject matter excluded by Clause 1.2 and its relation to the occupational health of workers at anesthetizing locations in health care facilities.
1.3 This Standard specifies construction and performance requirements for the equipment included in a scavenging system with the object of assuring the selection of a system that is effective for the intended purpose and minimizes the risk to a patient that is inherent in the addition of a scavenging system to an anesthetic breathing circuit, an extracorporeal oxygenator, or a breathing machine for medical use.
1.4 This Standard also includes requirements for the marking of scavenging systems and requirements for test procedures to be used to verify conformance of systems or components thereof to certain requirements of the Standard.
