Preface
This is the first edition of CSA Standard. B366.1, Solid—Fuel—Fired Appliances for Residential Use. In 1979 CSA published Preliminary Standard 3366, Solid—Fuel Fired Appliances for Residential Use, which covered both central-fired units and space heaters. Subsequently it was decided to replace B366 with two new Standards as follows:
(a) B366.1, Solid—Fuel—Fired Appliances for Residential Use; and
(b) B366.2, Space Heaters for Use with Solid Fuels.
Together these Standards supersede B366. In addition, this Standard includes requirements for add—on furnaces and add—on boilers.
In recent years, much emphasis has been placed on energy conservation and there has been a great deal of renewed interest in the use of solid fuels such as wood and coal as energy sources for residential heating. This has resulted in a proliferation of solid—fuel—fired heating appliances on the market and a demand that they be subject to controls in the interest of public safety. CSA has responded to this demand by developing both this Standard on residential type solid—fuel—fired central heating units and CSA Standard B366.2 on space heaters for use with solid fuels. It is intended that these' appliances be installed in accordance with CSA Standard B365, Installation Code for Solid—Fuel Burning Appliances and Equipment.
Scope
1.1
This Standard applies to hand—fuelled or stoker—equipped solid—fuel—fired appliances having an input rating not exceeding 300 kW (1 000 000 Btu/h) that have provision for venting directly to the outdoors by means of flue pipes, chimneys, etc. and are intended primarily for residential heating.
1.2
This Standard applies to appliances, factory—or field-assembled, that have been, or could have been, completely assembled at the manufacturer's plant and transported in the assembled condition.
1.3
This Standard also applies to the hand—fueled or stoker—equipped solid—fuel features of a combination solid-fuel—/fue1—oi1—fired appliance, intended primarily foxy residential heating, where the solid—fuel features may affect the safety or performance of the oil—fired appliance. In these cases, requirements in this Standard are additional to the requirements for the specific oil-fired appliance.
1.4
This Standard also applies to outdoor—aired solid-fuel-fired appliances. For the purposes of these requirements, outdoor-aired refers to appliances wherein all combustion air is to be taken directly from the outdoors.
1.5
This Standard also applies only to solid-fuel—fired furnaces intended to be added on directly in, series at a point after the warm air leaves the existing forced—warm—air oil furnace (downstream series add—on).
1.6
The requirements for solid—fuel—fired add-on furnaces also apply to any additional ductwork, controls, and other equipment recommended by the add—on furnace manufacturer and intended to be added on during the installation of the furnace.
1.7
The requirements for solid—fuel-fired add-on furnaces do not apply to parallel systems and upstream series add-ons (where the solid—fuel-fired furnace has been added on directly in series at a point before the air enters the existing forced—warm—air oil furnace).
1.8
This Standard does not cover fireplaces, incinerators, or space heaters.
Note: Metric units of measurement in this Standard are in accordance with the International System of Units (SI). If a value for measurement as given in this Standard is followed by an equivalent value in other units, the first stated is to be regarded as the requirement. A given equivalent value- may be approximate.
