      Preface

      This is the third edition of CSA P.2, Testing method for measuring the annual fuel utilization efficiency of residential gas-fired or oil-fired furnaces and boilers. It supersedes the previous edition, published in 2007 under the title Testing method for measuring annual fuel utilization efficiency of residential gasfired furnaces and boilers and the previous edition of CSA B212 published in 2000 under the title Energy utilization efficiencies of oil-fired furnaces and boilers.

      For the most part, the testing method specified in this Standard is consistent with ANSI/ASHRAE 103-1993, Method of Testing for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency of Residential Central Furnaces and Boilers, and with the US Department of Energy (DOE) provisions in 10 CFR 430, Subpart B, Appendix N, Uniform test method for measuring the energy consumption of furnaces and boilers. Accordingly, this Standard is intended to serve as a stand-alone document that can be referenced by Canadian jurisdictions.

      The main changes from the previous edition are as follows:

      a) Requirements for oil-fired furnaces and boilers have been added to this Standard;

      b) Table 2 has been added to list oil furnace and boiler classifications to which this Standard applies;

      c) Table 4 has been added to list the characteristics for test fuel oils;

      d) Table 5 has been added to provide detailed requirements for test fuel oils.

      e) Table 6 has been added to specify the higher heating values for fuel oil to be used for testing;

      f) Table 7 has been added to provide, adjustment of observed API gravity to standard API gravity at 60°F for testing;

      g) Table 11 has been revised to include requirements for test fuel oils.

      h) Figure 9, Suggested oil burner test setup has been added for oil-fired appliances;

      i) Non-mandatory minimum performance levels for furnaces and boilers has been updated (see Annex C);

      j) A non-mandatory testing method for measuring the annual electrical energy consumption and power consumption in standby mode of furnaces and boilers has been updated to include average annual electrical standby mode and off mode energy consumption (see Annex E);

      k) A reference to IEC 62301, Household electrical appliances - Measurement of standby power, was added; and

      l) Table E.1, Design heating conditions and equivalent full-load run-times for space heating systems in eleven Canadian cities has been added.

      CSA acknowledges that the development of this Standard was made possible, in part, by the financial support of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), the Ontario Ministry of Energy (OME), Efficiency Nova Scotia and Manitoba Hydro.

      This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard.

      This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Efficiency of Residential Gas-fired and Oil-fired Furnaces and Boilers, and Industrial and Commercial Package Furnaces, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Energy Efficiency and Related Performance of Fuel-Burning Appliances and Equipment, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee.

      This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.

      Scope

      1.1

      This Standard specifies a testing method for measuring the annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) and electrical energy consumption of residential gas-fired or oil-fired forced-air furnaces, low-pressure steam boilers, and hot water boilers.

      Note: The test method simulates seasonal space heating.

      This Standard includes

      a) a testing method for cyclic and part-load performance;

      b) methods for interpolating and extrapolating test data; and

      c) calculation procedures for establishing seasonal performance.

      1.2

      This Standard applies to furnaces with inputs up to and including 65.94 kW (225 000 Btu/h) and boilers with inputs less than 87.92 kW (300 000 Btu/h) intended for use in residential applications. This Standard also applies to packaged furnaces with inputs up to and including 65.94 kW (225 000 Btu/h) that contain an air conditioner within the same cabinet that has a rated cooling capacity of 19.05 kW (65 000 Btu/h) or less. Where the input device (e.g., nozzle) changes the capacity of the appliance, each appliance/input device combination shall be tested in accordance with the test procedure.

      Note: Oil furnaces may be shipped with multiple nozzles, and AFUE values are required for each nozzle.

      1.3

      Typical furnace and boiler classifications covered by this Standard are listed in Tables 1 and 2. This Standard applies to the gas- or oil-fired portion of a multifuel burning appliance.

      1.4

      This Standard does not take into account the effects of heating system installation variables and therefore cannot be used to determine absolute measures of performance for specific installation configurations. Accordingly, this Standard is intended to be used for comparing energy consumption measurements of furnace and boiler models.

      1.5

      In CSA Standards, shall is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; should is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; may is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard; and can is used to express possibility or capability.

      Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.

      Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.

      Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.

      1.6

      The values given in SI (metric) units are the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.
