In 1958, the Canadian Standards Association published the first edition of the CSA Standard B149, Installation Code for Gas Burning Appliances and Equipment. It was superseded by later editions in 1962 and 1966. Following the publication of the 1966 edition, the decision was made to split the Code into two parts; the first part to be designated B149.1, dealing with the installation requirements for appliances and equipment burning natural gas, and the second part to be designated B149.2, dealing with the installation of appliances and equipment burning propane. As a first step it was decided to prepare B149.2 which was first published in 1969.
CGA was accredited by the Standards Council of Canada as the standards writing organization responsible for preparing standards for gas burning appliances and equipment, and in this connection took over responsibility for the B149 Code in 1974. New editions of the Code were subsequently published in 1976,1978,1980,1986 and 1991. This particular edition supersedes the CAN/CGA-B149.1 -M91 Code.
In 1982, Amendment #l to CAN1-B149.1-M80 was published, containing requirements for the installation of NGV fuel system components on highway vehicles, as well as requirements for NGV refuelling stations. These requirements were incorporated as parts of the CAN/CGA-B149.1-M86. The requirements for installation of NGV fuel system components were taken out of the 1991 edition and were published in a separate Code, CAN/CGA-B149.4-M91, Natural Gas for Vehicle Installation Code. Although the requirements on refuelling stations were retained in the 1991 edition, they have been removed from this edition but are contained in the CAN/CGA-B108-M95 NGV Refuelling Stations Installation Code.
In 1989, a new Code, CAN/CGA-B149.3-M89, Code for the Field Approval of Fuel-Related Components on Appliances and Equipment, was published. The 6149.3 superseded Parts 6 and 7 of CAN/CGA-B149.1-M86 and CAN/CGA-B149.2-M86 Codes. These parts contained requirements for field construction of appliances, and additional requirements for field construction of high-pressure or high-input appliances, respectively. The requirements of the B149.3 also include updated valve-train diagrams from the CGA-3.0-1968 Standard, Definitions and General Field Recommendations.
In 1992, Amendment #1 to CAN/CGA-B149.1 -M91 was published containing Vent Sizing Tables for Category i Appliances. These tables were introduced to address the deficiency in the codes for vent sizing of Category I fan-assisted appliances and for spillage-susceptible appliances under depressurization. These tables are included in Appendix B of the 1995 code.
Also included in the 1995 Code is the B106 Installation Code for Vehicle Refuelling Appliances without storage facilities. This Code was developed by a special task force of the CGA NGV Subcommittee and approved by the B149 Committee in 1990. Now contained in Part 9 of the B149.1-M95 Code, this section is intended to establish essential requirements and minimum standards for the installation of NGV vehicle refuelling appliances.
The CGA B149 Installation Code Committee, which is responsible for preparing this Code, consists of members of the Provincial gas inspection authorities, natural gas utilities, propane distributors, appliance, equipment and accessory manufacturers, certification organizations and representatives from the Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Institute, the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada and Federal Government departments. This Code has been accepted by the Interprovincial Gas Advisory Council.
Scope
1.1
This Code applies to
(a) the installation of appliances, equipment, components and accessories where gas is to be used for fuel purposes;
(b) the installation of piping and tubing systems extending from the termination of the utility installation; and
(c) the installation of vehicle refuelling appliances and associated equipment meeting the requirements of a general purpose appliance to fill a natural gas fuelled vehicle.

This Code does not apply to
(a) marine or pipeline terminals:
(b) petroleum refineries;
(e) gas where used as a feedstock in chemical plants;
(d) utility pipeline distribution and transmission pipelines;
(e) storage and handling of liquefied natural gas or underground reservoirs for natural gas;
(f) the installation of NGV fuel systems, containers, and refueling stations;
(g) the storage and utilization of compressed natural gas on boats; and
(h) the installation of vehicle refuelling appliances when NGV storage exceeding 9 standard cubic feet (254 dm3) is an integral part of the system.
1.3
Where the term gas is used, the requirements of this Code shall apply equally to and include any of the following gases or mixtures of them: natural gas, manufactured gas, or mixtures of propane gas and air.
