    CSA Preface

    This is the second edition of CAN/CSA-ISO/TR 10017, Guidance on statistical techniques for ISO 9001:2000, which is an adoption without modification of the identically titled ISO (International Organization for Standardization) Technical Report 10017 (second edition, 2003-05-15). It supersedes the previous edition published in 2000 under the title Guidance on statistical techniques for ISO 9001:1994 (adopted ISO/TR 10017:1999). At the time of publication, ISO/TR 10017:2003 is available from ISO in English only.

    The ISO 9000 and ISO 10000 family of Standards were developed by quality experts from around the world, under the auspices of ISO Technical Committee 176. Canada plays a major role in this area. The Secretariat of ISO/TC 176 is held by CSA on behalf of Canada’s member body in ISO, the Standards Council of Canada.

    Canadian stakeholders participate actively in the administration and development of the ISO 9000 and ISO 10000 family of International Standards, through CSA’s national consensus development forum. The CSA Technical Committee on Quality Management is the source of Canadian experts and public input for the ISO 9000 and ISO 10000 Standards. In its capacity as the Canadian Advisory Committee to ISO/TC 176 (CAC/ISO/TC 176), the Technical Committee is responsible for

    (a) developing and submitting coordinated Canadian responses, comments, and voting actions on ISO/TC 176 documents;

    (b) providing the Canadian delegates participating at international meetings of ISO/TC 176 and its Working Groups; and

    (c) recommending the Canadian position for delegates to take in international meetings.

    This Technical Report was reviewed for Canadian adoption by the CSA Technical Committee on Quality Management (CAC/ISO/TC 176), under the jurisdiction of the Strategic Steering Committee on Business Management, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. A list of the members of the Technical Committee is available upon request. This Standard has been approved as a National Standard of Canada by the Standards Council of Canada.

    Scope

    This Technical Report provides guidance on the selection of appropriate statistical techniques that may be useful to an organization in developing, implementing, maintaining and improving a quality management system in compliance with ISO 9001.

    This is done by examining those requirements of ISO 9001 that involve the use of quantitative data, and then identifying and describing the statistical techniques that can be useful when applied to such data. The list of statistical techniques cited in this Technical Report is neither complete nor exhaustive, and does not preclude the use of any other techniques (statistical or otherwise) that are deemed to be beneficial to the organization.

    Furthermore, this Technical Report does not attempt to prescribe which statistical technique(s) are to be used; nor does it attempt to advise on how the technique(s) are to be implemented. This Technical Report is not intended for contractual, regulatory or certification/registration purposes. It is not intended to be used as a mandatory checklist for compliance with ISO 9001:2000 requirements.

    The justification for using statistical techniques is that their application would help to improve the effectiveness of the quality management system.

    NOTE 1 The terms .statistical techniques. and .statistical methods. are often used interchangeably.

    NOTE 2 References in this Technical Report to .product. are applicable to the generic product categories of service, software, hardware and processed materials, or a combination thereof, in accordance with the definition of .product. in ISO 9000:2000.
