Preface
This new Standard is one of a series issued under Part III of the Canadian Electrical Code.
Rules for grounding, in general, and for utility-owned electrical supply stations in particular, are presented with a view to safety of personnel and the general public. These rules may be observed in a variety of ways using different designs. It is therefore recommended that the IEEE Guide for Safety in Alternating Current Substation Grounding(No. 80, March 1961) be consulted for general information and design guides.
Grounding rules specific to utility plant other than electrical supply stations may be found in applicable Standards of Part III of the Canadian Electrical Code.
Grounding requirements for customer-owned plant are contained in Part I of the Canadian Electrical Code except for installations in mines which are contained in Part V of the Canadian Electrical Code.
This Standard was prepared by the Committee on Ground Current Coordination under the jurisdiction of the Sectional Committee on CE Code, Part III and was formally approved by these Committees and the CSA Standards Policy Board.
Scope
1.1
This Standard covers general grounding requirements for utility-owned plant and specific grounding requirements for utility-owned electrical supply stations. The requirements are specified on the basis of safety to the public and to employees of the utility. The rules do not deal with detailed design of an entire grounding system. They are minimum requirements for a safety point of view and are not necessarily adequate for proper operation.
