1.1 This Standard applies to connectors for use with copper or aluminum conductors, or both, for providing contacts between current-carrying parts such as terminals, between lengths of wire and tap connectors, in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, as follows:
(a) pressure wire connectors intended to hold one or more copper or aluminum conductor(s); (b) connectors intended for use in appliances and equipment that comply with the requirements for such appliances and equipment; (c) soldering connectors; (d) splicing wire and cable connectors intended for use with No. 4 AWG and larger; and
Note A splicing wire and cable connector taking a range of con ductor sizes may include conductor sizes smaller than No. 4 AWG.
1.2 This Standard is intended for connectors suitable for use with conductors in the size range shown in Table 1, and as follows:
(a) Aluminum (i) 12 AWG and 10 AWG solid; and (ii) 12 AWG to 2000 kcmil stranded, Class B (see ASTM Standard B8). (b) Copper (i) 30 AWG to 10 AWG solid or stranded; and (ii) 8 AWG to 2000 kcmil stranded, Class B or C (see ASTM Standard B8). For further information about the conductors see ASTM Standards B8, B172, B173, B174, B231M, B400, B496, and D471.
Note Other sizes within the above ranges and other strandings may be acceptable if they meet the performance requirements of this Standard.
1.3 This Standard does not apply to connectors intended for direct burial; connectors for use at voltage levels in excess of 600 V (1000 V in a sign or luminaire); manually applied (twist- on) connectors; built-in terminal connectors on devices rated less than 30 A; and connectors intended for outlet-box mounting or having provision for stress relief.
1.4 The values given in SI (metric) units are the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.
