Preface
This sixteenth edition of the Canadian Electrical Code was approved by the Committee on CE Code, Part I, and the Advisory council on Electrical Safety at their June 1989 meetings in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. This sixteenth edition supersedes previous editions published in 1927, 1930, 1935, 1939, 1947, 1953, 1958, 1962, 1966, 1969, 1972, 1975, 1978, 1982, and 1986.
Section 0 to 16 and 26 are considered to be General sections, the others being Supplementary or Amendatory sections.
The most significant changes have been made to the following Sections:
Section 4 - Conductors
Section 10 - Grounding and Bonding
Section 12 - Wiring Methods
Section 18 - Hazardous Locations
Section 26 - Installation of Electrical Equipment
Section 32 - Fire Alarm Systems and Fire Pumps
Section 38 - Elevators, Escalators, and Similar Equipment
Section 68 - Pools, Tubs, and Spas
Section 78 - Marinas, Yacht Clubs, Marine Wharves, Structures, and Fishing Harbours
In addition, Section 24, Patient Care Areas, Section 28, Motors and Generators, and Section 52, Diagnostic Imaging Installations, were completely rewritten. Section 50, Data Processing Systems, Section 58, Fur Storage Vaults, and Section 64, Induction and Dielectric Heating Equipment were deleted. Section 66, Amusement Parks, Midways, Carnivals, and Travelling Shows, Section 80, Cathodic Protection, Section 82, Closed-Loop Power Distribution, and Section 84, Interconnection of Electric Power Production Sources, were added.

Scope
This Code covers all electrical work and electrical equipment operating or intended to operate at all voltages in electrical installations for buildings, structures, and premises, including factory-built relocatable and non-relocatable structures, with the following exceptions:
(a) Installations or equipment employed by an electric or communication utility in the exercise of its function as a utility, and located outdoors or in buildings or sections of buildings used for that purpose.
(b) Equipment and facilities that are used in the operation of an electric railway and are supplied exclusively from circuits that supply the motive power;
(c) Installations or equipment used for railway signalling and railway communication purposes, and located outdoors or in buildings or sections of buildings used exclusively for such installations;
(d) Aircraft; and
(e) Self-propelled marine vessels except where such vessels are stationary for periods exceeding 5 months and are connected to a shore supply of electricity continuously or from time to time.
