Preface
This is the first edition of CSA C116, Fibre-reinforced polymer composite crossarms. This Standard was developed at the request of industry stakeholders that perceived the need for a Canadian standard on fibre-reinforced polymer composite crossarms.
This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Fibre-reinforced Polymer Composite Crossarms, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Overhead Systems and the Strategic Steering Committee on Power Engineering and EMC, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee.
This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.
Scope
1.1
This Standard sets out the requirements for fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite crossarms for use on overhead electrical systems.
1.2
FRP composite crossarms are used with connecting hardware and are part of a structure supporting overhead conductors and insulators that includes poles, guys, and anchors. This Standard specifies requirements for the FRP composite crossarm and does not address the overall structure as a system.
Note: An optional classification system is described in Table A.1 and is provided as an informative reference for users of the Standard.
1.3
The values given in SI units are units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
Note: In the utilities industry, both metric and imperial units are found in common practice and so are both used in this Standard.
1.4
In this Standard, shall is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; should is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and may is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard.
Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.
Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.
Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
