According to Health Canada, a leading cause of gas-fired water heater accidents is the lack of safety guidelines. This harmonized standard addresses that need by providing minimum performance and safety requirements, and detailing test and examination criteria for non-metallic dip tubes used in hot water heaters.
ANSI Z21.98-2012/CSA 4.10-2012 was developed through years of research entailing manufacturing, testing, installation, maintenance and inspection of these heating appliances. The provisions in this standard are intended to help reduce such risks while retaining the normal operation of the appliance.
Preface/Scope
Preface
This publication represents a basic standard for safe operation, substantial and durable construction, and acceptable performance of non-metallic dip tubes for use in water heaters. It is the result of years of experience in the manufacture, testing, installation, maintenance, inspection and research. There are risks of injury to persons inherent in appliances and their components that, if completely eliminated, would defeat the utility of the appliance. The provisions in this standard are intended to help reduce such risks while retaining the normal operation of the appliance.
Scope
1.1.1 This Standard applies to newly produced non-metallic dip tubes intended for use in gas-fired water heaters.
1.1.2 Compliance of a dip tube with this standard does not imply that such dip tube is acceptable for use in gas-fired water heaters without supplemental tests with the dip tube installed in the particular water heater design..
