We are pleased to announce that we have converted this course to a virtual, instructor-led format. Virtual courses may take place over several days in half day sessions. We have redesigned all our courses to maximize learning in a virtual environment. Students will still have the opportunity to participate and interact with the instructor.

      Virtual Training

Virtual AM sessions will be delivered from 8:30 – 12:30 ET.

Virtual Midday sessions will be delivered from 11:30 - 15:30 ET.

Virtual PM sessions will be delivered from 13:30 – 17:30 ET.

Each Attendee participates in the live, instructor-led sessions via a dedicated desktop or laptop. Tablet and Mobile are not compatible to the CSA Group’s Webex Training sessions.

Over the last 20 years, the connections between construction activity and negative patient outcomes have become well known. While procedures during renovations in existing healthcare buildings have become the norm, new construction project procedures continue to evolve at a rapid pace. The most recent edition of the CSA Z317.13 Standard introduces enhanced safety with a vision to the occupants of the healthcare building over the long term and not just during the actual construction itself. To effectively implement such procedures, healthcare construction teams can put themselves in a position to be successful by ensuring that a well thought out, comprehensive and detailed infection control plan has been developed and accepted by the project’s multi-disciplinary team before any work takes place on the project.

With significant updates to Clause 8 of CSA Z317.13 (the Clause that specifically deals with new construction projects), this course digs deep into these new requirements and will help construction team members build that infection control plan that is so critical to the success of a healthcare construction project.

*Note: This course has been developed as an in-depth review of the newly introduced, new construction requirements of the Standard and is intended for experienced healthcare construction team members who are involved with the development of, or review of infection control plans for new healthcare construction projects.

It is recommended that attendees have previously completed both Infection Control during Construction courses and have healthcare construction experience.

Part 1 - Infection Control: Fundamentals of Infection Control during Construction, Renovation and Maintenance of Healthcare Facilities

      and

Part 2 - Infection Control – Effective Implementation and Practical Applications of Infection Control during Construction, Renovation and Maintenance of Healthcare Facilities

      Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

      • Identify the appropriate risk elements to be able to determine new construction categorization and construction stages as provided within CSA Z317.13
      • Develop key elements of an infection control plan that would apply to all categories of new construction
      • Develop detailed elements of an infection control plan associated with at least one category of new construction
      • Complete a working model of what an infection control plan for a new healthcare facility construction project might include. This model will be able to serve as a guide for development of their own IC Plan for any project in which they may become involved

      Target Audience

      • Primary: Construction company staff responsible for the development of, and the implementation of the IC Plan – this might include project managers, site supervisory staff and safety officer or compliance staff.
      •  Secondary: Hospital staff (project management, facilities management, construction coordination, infection prevention and control) who will act as members of the multi-disciplinary team and will be responsible for the review and acceptance of the IC Plan – This may include central government delivery staff (eg. Infrastructure Ontario project managers).
      • Tertiary: Design professionals (primarily architects and mechanical engineers) who will be advising construction teams or owners on the applicability and appropriateness of the IC Plan.

      What is Included

CSA Z317.13:22, Infection control during construction, renovation, and maintenance of health care facilities standard

Why Get Your Training From CSA?

Your instructor possesses many years of experience in the health care engineering field as well as in-depth knowledge of directly applicable CSA Group health care engineering standards. You'll be guided through an intensive program of study developed by a team of industry professionals while participating in interactive exercises designed to provide practical knowledge and understanding of infection prevention and control practices that help protect patients, staff and visitors during construction and renovation activities.

This course has now been approved for Continuing Education Credits from the Canadian Construction Association (CCA) as part of the Gold Seal Certification program. This program upholds Canadian construction management professionals to expectations and standards of excellence. All Gold Seal certified management professionals have been assessed and meet a Canadian requirement standard of industry knowledge, experience, education and training.

      Course Outline

This course outlines required infection prevention and control measures based on:

      • The type of construction project, e.g., a greenfield project, an addition to an existing HCF, or total repurposing or rebuilding of existing spaces in an existing HCF including substantive demolition to structural frame and building envelope
      • The proximity of the building site to other HCF buildings
      • The patient populations potentially affected by the construction
      • The activities undertaken at each stage of the new construction project including ventilation, plumbing, humidity, monitoring and access requirements that vary depending on construction category and stage of construction
