      Preface

      This is the first edition of CAN/CSA-ISO 5349-1, Mechanical vibration - Measurement and evaluation of human exposure to hand-transmitted vibration - Part 1: General requirements, which is an adoption without modification of the identically titled ISO (International Organization for Standardization) Standard 5349:1 (first edition, 2001-05-01).

      For brevity, this Standard will be referred to as CAN/CSA-ISO 5349-1 throughout.

      This Standard is part of the series of CSA Group Standards on Occupational Hearing Conservation. This series is divided into the following Standards, with additional Standards to be added as they are developed:

      a) CSA Z1007-16, Hearing loss prevention program (HLPP) management;

      b) CSA Z107.56-13, Measurement of noise exposure;

      c) CSA Z107.58-15, Noise emission declarations for machinery;

      d) CSA Z107.6-16, Audiometric testing for use in hearing loss prevention programs;

      e) CSA Z94.2-14, Hearing protection devices - Performance, selection, care, and use;

      f) CAN/CSA-ISO 5349-2:16, Mechanical vibration - Measurement and evaluation of human exposure to hand-transmitted vibration - Part 2: Practical guidance for measurement at the workplace; and

      g) CAN/CSA-ISO 10819:16, Mechanical vibration and shock - Hand-arm vibration - Measurement and evaluation of the vibration transmissibility of gloves at the palm of the hand.

      Adoption of this ISO Standard related to mechanical vibration, along with Standards such as ISO 5349-2 and ISO 10819, will provide awareness on hand-transmitted vibration and improve the occupational safety of workers across North America.

      Scope

      This part of ISO 5349 specifies general requirements for measuring and reporting hand-transmitted vibration exposure in three orthogonal axes. It defines a frequency weighting and band-limiting filters to allow uniform comparison of measurements. The values obtained can be used to predict adverse effects of hand-transmitted vibration over the frequency range covered by the octave bands from 8 Hz to 1 000 Hz.

      This part of ISO 5349 is applicable to periodic and to random or non-periodic vibration. Provisionally, this part of ISO 5349 is also applicable to repeated shock type excitation (impact).

      NOTE 1 The time dependency for human response to repeated shocks is not fully known. Application of this part of ISO 5349 for such vibration is to be made with caution.

      This part of ISO 5349 provides guidance for the evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration exposure, specified in terms of a frequency-weighted vibration acceleration and daily exposure time. It does not define limits of safe vibration exposure.

      NOTE 2 Annex C is concerned with the approximate relative importance of various characteristics of the vibration exposure which are believed to produce health effects.
