O112 SERIES-M1977 (R2006)
CSA Standards for Wood Adhesives
Product Details
Preface
This is the first edition of the 0112 Series of CSA Standards on Wood Adhesives, written in SI (le Systeme international d'unites). This Series supersedes earlier editions of the 0112 Standards written in yard-pound units, published in 1960, 1961, 1974 and 1975.
The Series is made up of nine Standards, the first of which covers definitions and standard test methods and is designated as 0112.0. The other Standards in the Series, designated as 0112.1, 0112,2, 0112.3, etc., cover the requirements for various types of wood adhesives.
The adhesives covered by this Series of Standards are intended to include those used by all segments of the wood-using industries including those for structural applications, plywood, furniture and the numerous other wood products where gluing plays an important role. The Series will be added to as new developments indicate the need.
This Series was prepared by the Technical Committee on Wood Adhesives under the jurisdiction of the Standards Steering Committee on Forest Products and was formally approved by these Committees.

This Standard contains certain standard test procedures and general requirements relating to the evaluation of wood adhesives in conformance with the O112-M Series of CSA Standards for Wood Adhesives. This Standard does not include special test methods which are peculiar to a particular adhesive and which are included in the appropriate material Standard.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
O112.1-M1977 - Animal Glues for Wood
Scope
1.1
This Standard covers animal glues used for the bonding of wood for general woodworking applications such as veneering, assembly gluing, edge gluing and other similar applications.
Note: For proper application, the manufacturer's instructions should be followed regarding preparation, application, and use of these glues.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
O112.2-M1977 - Starch Glues for Wood
Scope
1.1.1
This Standard covers starch glues intended for veneering and general wood bonding where moisture resistance of the glue bonds is not a requirement.
1.1.2
This Standard does not cover gums, mucilages, and pastes which are for other purposes.
1.2 Classification
Starch glues shall be supplied in one of the following types or forms:
(a) Type I - Dry powder form:
(i) Processed starch materials;
(ii) Natural starch materials; or
(b) Type II - Liquid form.
Note: For proper application, the manufacturer's instructions should be followed regarding preparation, application, and use of these glues.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
O112.3-M1977 - Casein Glue for Wood
Scope
1.1
This Standard covers casein glues used for the bonding of wood or for the bonding of wood and some non-wood materials to wood.
1.2 Classification
1.2.1 Form of Glue
The glue shall be furnished as a homogeneous, dry powder.
1.2.2 Types
The glue shall be one of the following types:
(a) Type I - Intended for use where a bond with resistance to moisture and to micro-organisms is required;
(b) Type II - Intended for use where a bond with resistance to moisture only is required; or
(c) Type III - Intended for use where low staining characteristics are required, and where moisture resistance is not a requirement.
Note: The proper application of these glues requires the maintenance of adequate pressure in conjunction with suitable temperature and humidity conditions for a sufficient time to permit the glue to set. For proper application, the manufacturer's instructions should be followed regarding preparation, application, and use of these glues.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
O112.4-M1977 - Polyvinyl Adhesives for Wood
Scope
1.1
This Standard covers polyvinyl resin adhesives for use in the manufacture of wood furniture and in other wood assemblies, and for the bonding of wood and some non-wood materials to wood, where high moisture resistance of the bond is not a requirement.
1.2 Classification
Polyvinyl acetate resin emulsion adhesives shall be furnished in one type only - liquid.
Note: For proper application, the manufacturer's instructions should be followed regarding preparation, application, and use of these glues.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
O112.5-M1977 - Urea Resin Adhesives for Wood (Room-and High-Temperature Curing)
Scope
1.1
This Standard covers unextended urea-formaldehyde resin adhesives, used for the bonding of wood in the manufacture of plywood and for other bonding of wood and some non-wood materials to wood where high strength and a moisture-resistant bond are required.
1.2 Classification
1.2.1 Form of Adhesive
The adhesive may be furnished as:
(a) Liquid with separate hardener or catalyst;
(b) Powder with separate hardener or catalyst; or
(c) Powder with incorporated hardener or catalyst.
1.2.2 Types of Adhesives
The adhesive shall be one of the following types:
(a) Type I - Room-temperature curing adhesive; or
(b) Type II - High-temperature curing adhesive.
Note: The proper application of these adhesives requires the maintenance of adequate pressure in conjunction with suitable temperature and himidity conditions for a sufficient time to effect a cure. For proper application, the manufacturer's instructions should be followed regarding preparation, application, and use of these glues.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
O112.6-M1977 - Phenol and Phenol-Resorcinol Resin Adhesives for Wood (High-Temperature Curing)
Scope
1.1
This Standard covers unextended phenol and phenol-resorcinol adhesives, and resins of these types used as a base for extended adhesives, to be used at temperatures above 85°C for the manufacture of plywood and other bonding of wood and some non-wood materials to wood, where a high strength, durable, waterproof bond is required. This Standard does not apply to extended mixes of these adhesives as commonly used for the manufacture of hot-pressed plywoods, but does apply to the resins used as a base for these extended adhesives in which case, for test purposes, the resin shall form the base of an unextended adhesive as recommended by the manufacturer.
1.2 Form of adhesive
The adhesive may be furnished as a liquid, powder, or film with separate hardener or catalyst, or filler, when required.
Note: The proper application of these adhesives requires the maintenance of adequate pressure in conjunction with suitable temperature and humidity conditions for a sufficient time to effect a cure.
