This Standard covers once-through high efficiency air-cleaning assemblies for maintaining radioactive particulate and
radioiodine releases below licenced limits in nuclear power plants. The Standard identifies and establishes minimum requirements for the design, manufacture, installation, and
preoperational acceptance testing for any or all of the following components that make up a high efficiency air-cleaning
(a) moisture separators;
(b) air heaters;
(d) HEPA filters;
(f) filter housings;
(g) assembly ductwork and dampers;
(h) testing equipment; and
(i) monitoring equipment for operational parameters.
Figures 1 and 2 schematically illustrate typical high efficiency air-cleaning assemblies.
The extent to which high efficiency nuclear air-cleaning systems are required in nuclear plants must be determined on a
case-by-case basis as outlined in CSA Standard N288.3.1.
Applicability in Other Nuclear Facilities
This Standard may be used to specify requirements or provide a guideline for the design of air-cleaning assemblies,
containing some or all of the aforementioned air-cleaning components, and in other nuclear facilities, such as research reactors, facilities for
(a) fuel manufacturing and reprocessing;
(b) radioactive waste management;
(c) production, research, and handling of radionuclides; and
(d) mining and milling of uranium ore.
This Standard does not cover
(a) removal of noble gases, gaseous carbon 14, and tritium; and
(b) components outside the air-cleaning assembly such as ductwork, fans, and dampers.
