Course Overview
The purpose of this course is to enable engineers, electricians, and technicians to apply the requirements of CSA SPE-343:21, Electric vehicle energy management systems and CSA C22.1:21, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (25th Edition) to the design, construction, installation, and inspection of electrical equipment that form part of an Electric Vehicle Energy Management System (EVEMS). With the increasing adoption of electric vehicles and EVEMS in various industries, ensuring safety, compliance, and reliability of electrical equipment is crucial. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the key standards and regulations, allowing participants to confidently work with EVEMS electrical equipment.
Included in this course:
- Introduction to EVSE and EVEMS
- EVEMS Standards
- Integration of EVEMS with local distribution companies
- Submetering
- Safety Requirements
- EVEMS Inspections
This course includes activities and a quiz. Use the activities to self-assess how well you understand and can apply what you are learning. Successful completion of the course will result in a Certificate of Completion, demonstrating proficiency in applying CSA SPE-343:21, Electric vehicle energy management systems and CSA C22.1:21, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (25th Edition) to EVEMS electrical equipment.
Learning Objectives
After taking this course, you will be able to:
- Explain the difference between the three levels of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE)
- Summarize equipment components and describe their functions
- Identify the common capacity limitations of utility-based supply systems and explain how EVEMS solutions can overcome these limitations
- Apply the requirements of CSA SPE-343:21, Electric vehicle energy management systems and CSA C22.1:21, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (25th Edition) to comply with the requirements of the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ)
- Explain the integration of EVEMS into the local distribution company (LDC) power system and identify the benefits of the integration
- Describe the interconnection between EVEMS and renewable energy sources
- Summarize the importance of submetering and co-locating electrical metering
- Describe potential EV electrical hazards and safety measures/personal protective equipment (PPE) to mitigate
- Describe the role of the AHJ and inspection in electrical installations
- Identify contractor responsibilities when installing and maintaining EVEMS
- Describe common warranty issues including reliability and service
Target Audience

Learn More About the CSA C22.1 and CSA SPE-343
Developed with input from a broad cross-section of electrical industry experts and with cooperation from all provinces, territories and several key jurisdictions across Canada, the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I is an integral part of the Canadian Electrical Safety System. Jurisdictions across Canada adopt the code as a model code for regulation, as is or with provincial or territorial interpretations.
The CSA SPE-343, Electric vehicle energy management systems, provides guidance for design, manufacture, and testing of electrical equipment that comprises or forms a part of an electric vehicle energy management system.
