Guidelines for the Use of Superplasticizing Admixtures in Concrete
Product Details
Preface
This is the first edition of CSA Preliminary Standard A266.5, Guidelines for the Use of Superplasticizing Admixtures in Concrete. It is intended to be a guide for the use of superplasticizing admixtures in Portland cement concrete.
Although superplasticizing admixtures have been used in Europe and Japan for many years, their use in Canada is relatively new. Consequently, user experience in the field is limited. CSA performance specifications for these admixtures have not yet been developed, and at present much reliance must be placed on literature and technical advice provided by the manufacturers. The performance of any particular superplasticizing admixture is highly dependent on the characteristics of the aggregates, cement, and conventional admixtures with which it is used. Field trials using various cement-admixture combinations are strongly recommended to ensure optimum combination of materials. Compatibility with conventional admixtures, when present, must also be verified.
These guidelines have been issued as a Preliminary Standard because some details are still to be established and a period of comment is desirable before issuing a formal CSA Standard.
This Standard is limited in validity to one year from the date of publication and, as a result, during the forthcoming year, the Committee will be reviewing the requirements contained in the Standard.
This Publication was prepared by the Task Force on Superplasticizers under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Concrete Admixtures.
Scope
1.1 General
1.1.1
This Standard covers the factors leading to the use of superplasticizing admixtures, their chemical composition and. classification, their effects on the more important characteristics and properties of fresh and hardened concrete, and their application in concrete construction.
1.1.2
This Standard is complementary to the following CSA Standards:
CAN3-A266.1, Air-Entraining Admixtures for Concrete;
CAN3-A266.2, Chemical Admixtures for Concrete;
CAN3-A266.3, Pozzolanic Mineral Admixtures for Use in Portland Cement Concrete;
CAN3-A266.4, Guidelines for the Use of Admixtures in Concrete.
