    Overview

    This online course covers the requirements of the National Standard, CAN/CSA S500 for design and construction of a thermosyphon foundation system when identified as a design objective and prepares participants to design and construct a new structure built on permafrost with a thermosyphon stabilized foundation.

    Course participants will develop an understanding of thermosyphon technology, including its main strengths and limitations when used in foundations in permafrost environments, the main steps in the thermosyphon foundation design and construction and commissioning process; key activities involved in the maintenance of thermosyphon foundations, including how to spot and what to do in the case of potential performance issues.

    Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to identify and respond to potential challenges involved with thermosyphons and explain the limitations of thermosyphon foundations based on site conditions and intended service life of the structure.

    Learning Objectives

    • Describe what a thermosyphon is, why they are used, what they look like, and why they fail;
    • Understand how climate change affects thermosyphon foundation design and maintenance;
    • Develop the skills necessary to design thermosyphon foundations so they can be appropriately maintained;
    • Understand the importance of planning construction/installation for seasonal considerations and incorporating into the project management/planning phase
    • Determine when to use other standards that are referenced in CAN/CSA S500
