      Potable water management is important for Canadian regions experiencing water shortages and water quality issues. CSA Group has published a number of standards specifying water system requirements for treating potable water.

      The B126 SERIES-13 - Water cisterns standard helps ensure that drinking water storage systems are properly designed, installed and located to help prevent health risks such as contaminated drinking water and accidents. It will help jurisdictions provide their citizens with guidelines, codes and best management practices to enable the use of these systems locally.

      Maintenance recommendations outlined in this standard will help keep cisterns properly sealed and identify any potential structural cracks. Cracked cisterns allow surface water, insects, animals and debris to infiltrate the cavity, leading to unsanitary conditions and personal hygiene problems. Once contaminated, cisterns are difficult to keep disinfected.

      Highlights of B126 SERIES-13 Include:

      B126 complements another related standard: CSA B128.3 - Performance of Non-Potable Water Treatment Systems, which specifies the design, installation, maintenance and field testing of non-potable water systems for applications such as flushing toilets, irrigating lawns and gardens, washing automobiles, showering, bathing, washing clothes, heating and cooling.

      Preface

      This is the first edition of the CSA B126 Series of Standards, Water cisterns. It consists of the following Standards:

      (a) CSA B126.0, General requirements and methods of testing for water cisterns;

      (b) CSA B126.1, Installation of water cisterns;

      (c) CSA B126.2, Commissioning and field inspection of water cisterns;

      (d) CSA B126.3, Operation and maintenance of water cisterns;

      (e) CSA B126.4, Decommissioning of water cisterns; and

      (f) CSA B126.5, Mobile water cisterns.

      These Standards are considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated Scope of the Standards.

      The development of these Standards was made possible, in part, thanks to the financial support of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Alberta Health, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Health Canada, Manitoba Water Stewardship, Saskatchewan Ministry of the Environment, Fiber Technology Corporation, and Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada. Such support does not indicate endorsement of the contents of these Standards.
